PRACTICE PROFILE

The practice was founded in 1986 by David Wadsworth. In 1994 David changed the name to BUILDING STRUCTURES ASSOCIATES to reflect his specialist field and to recognise his close association with other professionals in the construction industry. David has an honours degree in Civil Engineering and is a corporate member of both the Institutions of Structural and Civil Engineers. He is a Chartered Engineer. Nicola joined the practice in 2010, an experienced technician, and since 2017 a director. Together with David they form the core of the practice.

David's career started in 1970 working in construction and soon moved into the design of some heavy civil engineering schemes; highway bridges; pumping stations; sea defences; elevated motorways; deep excavations both in the UK and the Far East. In the early 80's there was the opportunity to work on building structures and these quickly became his main interest, one which he still finds exciting and challenging today. Projects have included new hospitals; schools; hotels; residential blocks; offices; industrial units; retail units; housing developments; football stadia; building conversions and extensions. Projects range from a few thousands to multi million pound construction costs.

David has been called upon to act as expert witness in several cases and the practise is frequently approached to offer advice on structural defects and forensic engineering matters.

David was made a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2009.

The set up of the practice allows David and Nicola to take projects forward and draw upon the talents of specialist geotechnical engineers, drainage engineers, draughtsmen, party wall surveyors, Architects and surveyors as the needs arise.

In 2022 David retired from the day to day work of the practise which is now handled by Nicola. David now acts as consultant.

The practice operates from its base in East Grinstead from where it can serve projects anywhere in the South East, London and the home counties.
